Welcome to the webpage of the "Sino-France Workshop 2005 on Formation and Evolution of Galaxies" (April 2005, Beijing).

This is the second one of the series of workshops between Chinese and French Astronomers who are studying formation and evolution of galaxies.

China and France are major countries representing Eastern culture and Western culture respectively. Cultural exchanges between the two sides have played significant roles in bilateral relations. As we know, with the efforts and helps of  the governments and leaders, China and France decided to held  the Chinese year in  France from Oct. 2003 to July 2004, and the French year in China from autumn 2004 to July 2005.  This is an excellent chance for the Astronomers of both sides to begin or expand their scientific collaborations.

Formation and evolution of galaxies are central questions in modern Astrophysics. France is one of the major members of European and the world Astronomy study. French astronomers have accumulated rich experiences in the building of many European observational facilities, such as ESO/VLT 8m telescopes, ESO/ALMA radio telescope, the Infrared Space Observatory and so on. Chinese Astronomy is in flourishing development, many studies are at the international level. Several large projects have been supported or are on-going, for example, LAMOST, the Primeval Telescope (PAST), the 500m radio telescope FAST and so on. Many young astronomers are joining these study fields, which are of major importance for their success.

On 12-19 March 2004,  the first Sino-France Workshop on Formation and Evolution of Galaxies was held in French Aix Au Provance, Fondation des Treilles, with the supports from Fondation des Treilles, CNRS, Paris Observatory, IAP and so on (please see some photos about the workshop and the beautiful sceneries in the South of France).  24 astronomers from two sides attended the workshop.   It was a successful workshop, many details about developing collaborations of  both sides are discussed, including the second workshop in Beijing in 2005. This workshop  helped us to ask for (already got permission) a collaboration project between the Chinese and France Astronomers, PICS, supported by CNRS.
